Fly Fishing Rod - Regular Reel and Line?
Can I use a "regular" fishing reel and line on a fly fishing rod?
It works fine (awesome actually), only serious trout fisherman will tell you otherwise. Purists...
I use an eight-and-half-foot, five/six-weight Eagle Claw fly rod with a Shakespeare Triggerspin reel on it loaded with four-pound Maxima mono. I use it for tossing the Float 'N Fly for crappie, ocassionally use it for nightcrawlers under a float for bluegills and redears, for trout with a casting bubble and a fly on a four to six foot leader, but recently, I've been using it for fly lining live shad for bass. The rod itself casts extremely well, easily handles small weights, and can easily handle a four-and-a-half-pound largemouth bass with ease, and its funner'n hell.
I didn't do this until fairly recently because for one, I didn't have a small enough reel to put on it, but also I just didn't think it would work well. Boy, was I wrong...
HOW DO I SETUP A FLY ROD?!?!?
this is driving me CRAZY! i bought a new rod because i make good flies and stuff but i don't know how to set it up. I got the reel on the rod but theres backing...and all this stuff. i will be fishing for trout. Please can someone help me?!
The backing goes on the reel first. Then connect the fly line with a nail knot. The leader gets connected to the end of the fly line either with a nail knot or a loop to loop set up.
