Fishing Combo Kit Questions
Ok this is a pretty long question, but i have finally decided..........?
I have a 20 gallon FW fishtank and am finally going to convert it into saltwater. I'm pretty sure i have everything for it, but here's the list anyway
- 2 20-40 gallon filters (they create flow, so i dont need a powerhead)
- 1 of these lights http://www.petsolutions.com/Current-USA-Satellite-Powercompact-Lights+I42901004.aspx
- 1 20-30 gallon heater
- thermometer
- a saltwater test kit
- instant ocean hydrometer
- instant ocean salt
- live sand
- 10-15 lbs of live rock
- R/O water
Is everthing or am i forgetting something?
The fish i want are:
- 2 percula/occelaris clowns (not sure which kind yet)
- 1 Pearly Jawfish
- 1 Green clown goby
- 2 turbo snails
- 2 astrea snails
- some blue leg hermits
I eventually want to get some bubble coral and taro tree coral. Is this a good combo? Any problems?

What kind of filters? I hope they're a high-capacity version, like Aquaclear, and not something retarded, like Tetra Whisper or Aqueon.
I don't really recommend the jawfish...they really prefer some depth to their sandbed. Try a small shrimpgoby, instead. The clowns will also be pushing it for size, but it could work. Don't use turbo snails. They get way too big, and will bulldoze your live rock wherever they want. Go with more Astrea, or some Cerith or Nessarius snails instead.
I also don't suggest mixing those corals. Soft corals have a tendency to throw chemicals into the water to inhibit other corals, especially LPS corals like bubbles. In such a tiny tank, it can prove fatal to the LPS.
Don't forget a separate container with a pump/heater to premix your saltwater in for water changes, too. And a skimmer would be a good idea, especially if you're dead set on mixing those corals.
Is it cheaper to buy an aquarium kit, or seperate?
I guess I'm getting a bigger fish tank. Not sure of the size, I think budge wise I can only go as big as like a 36gal. I can upgrade later.
Is it cheaper to buy one of those combo kits with the filter, and everything, or to just buy it seperately? I have plenty of rocks, plants,etc. I guess I would need a bigger filter, probably a bigger heater and of course, the tank and light itself? Whats the price difference from a 30 something gallon, to a 50 gallon?
sometimes its cheaper to buy the kits you can to wal-mart and buy a 55 gallon kit with hood light filter heater food water conditioner net thermometer and a little booklet for 150 thats a good deal it all depends I'm not sure about a 36 gal but if do buy a walmart kit and its long like a 55 gallon then buy another filter and put one on each end it will circulater your water better and the better the circulation the better the filtration. also it comes with an airpump I think not positive on that part everything else I'm sure on just go tot he sore because its not online or another option is you can wait like I did I was planning on upgrading from a 29 gallon to a 55 and I ened up getting a 125 gallon for 150 bucks and keeping the 29 gallon. but another option is to wait until your local pet store does a dollar per gallon sale then it can be cheaper to buy everything seperate because there is usually a lot of stuff on sale. either way you go its a good deal so good luck
