Fishing Reel Fly Questions
Can you put size 5 fly fishing line and reel on a size 8 rod?
It can be done and more so if the tip isn't that stiff to begin with, this is called underlining a rod.
Personally I've done it with some experimentation by splicing some 8-9 wt. line.
You might also use 5wt. line, add the leader with a weighted fly to compensate the difference.
But you may use different line brands of 5wt. to see which line the rod will cast better with.
Of course this is trial and error until you get it right. I've seen top of the line Fly Rod brands say 8wt. when in fact they perform better with X brand 6wt. line.
This depends mostly on the Rod you now have and how stiff it is and will
the above work well enough to load and flex the Rod that it will cast well.
The whole purpose of a Fly line(weight in grain) is to load(flex) the Rod tip so as to whip and cast the line.

This, is my first attempt at "fly fishing."!
So any tips or hints, You could give would be appreciated ... Please, keep in mind I am confined in a wheelchair!?
