Fly Fishing Casting Tips Questions

Whats the best way to learn to fly fish?

I have recently started fly fishing and i need some tips and advice for flies, casting, and places to fish

The BEST way is to take classes. At least two -- one on fishing techniques and tactics (preferably one where you actually fish), another class on casting. With a class you will learn properly from the very start and you won't learn any bad habits that you have to unlearn (trust me on this -- I speak from personal experience).

However, not everyone has classes available nor has the time or money to enroll in such classes. The next best way to learn to fly fish is to have someone give you some informal training, preferably someone with a lot experience, patience, and spare time. If you're a young whippersnapper you might be in luck if you happen to know an older fly angler -- I have found oldtimers are very generous with their time and knowledge, especially to respectful young'uns. Some angling clubs and flyshops will offer rudimentary clinics on fly angling.

However, not everyone even knows someone else who fly fishes, so this may not be an option, either. The next best way to learn is from videos. Videos are almost as helpful as a real person, because they allow you to visualize various aspects of fly angling -- the most important one being fly casting. It's very hard to TELL someone how to fly cast, and it's even harder to do it in writing. Videos can help a lot because you can see it. You can pick up videos at the library, from video stores (Netflix has some), and there are some decent videos on YouTube. Some flyshops also have fly angling videos to borrow or rent that you can't find elsewhere. Watch as many as you can. You'll learn something different from each one.

Next to videos, the Internet is a very valuable resource. There are many, many, many websites that have "basic" information about fly fishing. Read as many as you can -- they'll all have slightly different angles on the topic, and because fly fishing is such a huge undertaking, it's good to hear from differing points of view. Here are two websites to get you started, but Google "beginner fly fishing" or variations thereof, and you'll find lots more:

http://www.hooked-on-flies.com

I have seen some really good questions and answers right here in Yahoo!Answers, too. I'm not a pro, guide, nor even a guru, but I'll give you as much info as I can, and there are at least six or eight other guys here who know a helluva lot about fly angling -- you can learn a lot by asking questions here, especially very specific questions.

Books probably contain the richest and most voluminous information about fly angling, but that information is hard to process for a beginner, so in my opinion books are the least useful way to learn to fly fish, especially when it comes to casting. You can learn of strategy and tactics and the various fly patterns from books, and there are some incredibly good books out there about fly angling, but there will be time for books when you're kind of on your feet and fishing.

Good luck to you -- I salute you for jumping into this with both feet without much help. It's a great hobby that will keep you learning your whole life.
